Valmec awarded the Broken Hill Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project

March 2022

Valmec is proud to announce our recent award for the Broken Hill Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project on behalf of our valued client AGL Australia.

AGL will build, operate, and maintain a 50 megawatt (MW) / 50 megawatt hour (MWh) grid-scale battery energy storage system at Broken Hill NSW.

Valmec has been contracted to provide Civil, Structural, Mechanical & Piping (SMP), and Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) works for this project.

Our Valmec team will be carrying out detailed Civil and SMP works for the installation of the BESS battery bank modules and inverters. The Electrical scope will consist of design and implementation of multiple in-ground HV cable runs, as well as commissioning of the HV system. Additionally, Valmec will be assisting our consortium partner – Fluence, in the commissioning of the plant.

Valmec will be soon mobilising to site, and at that time our team will be working closely with Fluence, to address project constructability and work toward a best for project execution plan.

The Broken Hill battery is another step forward as AGL becomes a leading orchestrator of batteries in Australia with grid-scale projects in NSW, SA, and Victoria. As Australia progresses its energy transition, firming technologies like batteries will play an important role in energy storage and supporting renewable energy supply.
